Special Education Preschool Programs

Special Education Preschool is an early intervention program which provides developmentally appropriate learning experiences to address the fundamental needs of children to acquire basic skills and social competence. Children in this program have specific, identified developmental delays. These needs may be in the domains of cognitive, language, motor and/or social-emotional functioning. The children in this program have opportunities to play and interact with age-appropriate peers.

Special Education Preschool is taught by special education teachers who are supported by a transdisciplinary team. In addition to the special education teacher, the team also includes the nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech/language pathologist, school psychologist, and social worker. Each preschool class is supported by paraprofessionals who assist the team. The TECEC Principal oversees all the preschool programs. Bus transportation is provided by the Town of Trumbull for children with identified special needs.

To be placed in the Special Education Preschool, three and four year olds are assessed and found eligible for special education. An Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is developed for implementation by a Planning and Placement Team (PPT). Inquiries about this program may be made to Child Find at 452-4352.
